When the Bruins step out under the Friday night lights this fall, they will be returning to a newly renovated turf field. The USJ Board of Trustees has approved a project to install FieldTurf® on the football field as part of the on-going Master Plan improvements and Imagine More Campaign. This project will also include striping for a soccer field.
Head of School Stuart Hirstein commented, “Our mission statement includes the words ‘we are committed to athletic excellence.’ This turf field is our commitment to upholding our mission of giving our student athletes excellent facilities, playing surfaces, and opportunities to excel at USJ.”
“This will open our field up to cross-functional use,” says USJ Athletic Director Michael Stroup. “For the first time, the Bruins and Lady Bruins will have the option to host soccer games at Kirkland Field. The turf will also cut down on rainouts and could allow more games to be added into the schedule.”
FieldTurf® is a national leader in sports surfacing, with over 4,000 installations in the USA alone. Artificial turf will allow for extended hours of field use. It also requires no downtime, no recovery time, allowing our teams the ability to play longer into different seasons.
“Combined with our recently renovated track, we are excited for the opportunities that this FieldTurf® field offers for our students and for the additional community and regional events that we can host,” says Chairman of the Board James Kirkland.
The project has been made possible by a generous lead gift from the Clay Carlock family, along with support gifts from our presenting sponsors, ATA, BancorpSouth, Blue Hawaiian Pools, and West TN Bone & Joint; and our major sponsors, the Bruins Club, Jonathan and Martha Campbell, Garrett Plumbing & Heating Co., King Tire Company, Law Offices of Morrison & Barnes, Mark Miller, DDS, Posh Lighting, Nest Realty, Tripp and Brittney Tucker, The Uniform Source, VIP Weight Loss Medical Clinic, Voya Financial, and West Tennessee Healthcare/Sports Plus Rehab Centers.
“The investment in the stadium project shows USJ’s commitment not only to excellence in academics, but also excellence in athletics. For our family, this is just a way to give back for all we have received from USJ through the years,” says Clay Carlock.
The enthusiastic support for this project has also allowed USJ to increase the Imagine More Capital Campaign goal.
“As part of the Imagine More Campaign, this project has pushed our total commitments to date to just over $3.6 Million. When we launched our campaign in February 2019, our original campaign goal was $4 Million. With that goal in sight, a new goal of $5 Million has been established,” says Chief Development Officer Russ Ellis. “We are thankful and blessed for the support we have received to date, and look forward to continually building on this momentum.”
The FieldTurf® field is an exciting addition to the Phase I upgrades for USJ. This summer the school will see the completion of new playgrounds at the Lower School, new athletic press boxes, and a new campus entrance.
