College Prep Workshop Series

USJ College Advising begins working with students as freshmen and works with students and parents throughout all facets of the college process until graduation. Working alongside USJ’s college advisors, USJ students and families are supported throughout the college exploration, planning, application, and decision-making process. 

We offer a college prep workshop series that both parents and students are welcome to attend. These personalized services are considered part of your tuition and are offered to USJ students free of charge. The schedule can be found below. 

 

Juniors: Kick-Off to College

What: This event is held in the fall semester of junior year. We will present a timeline for college preparation including application deadlines, college exploration and information on pursuing financial aid.

When: November, 5, 2019 - 6:00 p.m.

Where: Blankenship Theater

 

Junior Spring Seminar

What: Held every spring, the USJ college advising department invites college admissions professionals throughout the Southeast to present information on the latest trends in college admissions and financial aid.

When: TBA - 7:30 a.m.

Senior Night: College Prep 101

What: The USJ college advising department hosts and evening meeting presenting an updated senior year timeilne for applicatoins, scholarship deadlines as well as federal, sate and institutional financial aid information.

ACT Reading Prep

What: Director of College Advising Carol Ryan will work with students on strategies needed to be successful on the Reading portion of the upcoming ACT (October 1 at USJ, and October 26). Carol also has substantial experience as an Upper School English and AP English Language and Composition instructor. $75 registration fee.

When: Saturday, September 21, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

 

ACT Math Prep

What: Honors math instructor Bryce King will refresh students on the mathematical material needed to be successful on the math portion of the upcoming ACT (October 1 at USJ, and October 26). Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry topics will be reviewed, and test-taking strategy will be discussed. Registration required. ACT Math Prep course will be available on October 23-24. $75 registration fee.

When: Saturday, September 29, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

 

ACT English Prep

What: Only have one day to attend that week? A one-day option is available for $50. You select the day to attend. Use coupon code: acteng1dy at checkout.

Join junior English and AP Language and Composition instructor Whitney Meriwether for two days of ACT English practice to prepare for the upcoming ACT (October 1 at USJ, and October 26). Students will practice each type of question featured on the English section and receive notes and materials to study for future ACT tests. Registration required. Additional ACT English Prep course will be available on October 21-22. $100 for both days.

When: Saturday, September 29 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, September 30 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

 

Your USJ College Advisors, Carol Ryan and Shannon Whisenant, are members of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling (SACAC). They attend web-based and in-person training offered by these professional organizations. During the 2018-2019 school year, Mrs. Ryan was selected as a SACAC mentor for new college counselors. Mrs. Whisenant and Mrs. Ryan are active participants in continuing education. Both counselors attend the College Board and ACT training each year and are  invited to participate in college fly-ins to learn about individual institutions.
