The Upper/Middle School schedule changes from six to seven periods this school year. The school day begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 3:05 p.m. Each class period is 50 minutes long and will rotate to a different time period each week. Each of your child’s classes will be labeled A, B, C, D, E, F, or G.
• Classes labeled A and B flipflop every other week during the first two periods of the day. This accommodates part-time teachers so they do not need to come back later in the day to teach another class.
• Classes C through G rotate weekly into a new time period. For example, if your child’s Algebra I class is labeled “C,” it will be during third period the first week, the fourth period the next week, then fifth period the next week, etc.
Creating seven class periods allows us to offer study hall for each student. Rotating classes alleviates the problem of students missing the last class period often because of athletics and other school activities. That burden is now shared by five different classes. Rotation also benefits student learning; “brain-based” research shows that it helps students to have a class at different times of the day.
Students will adjust to their schedules quickly. To help parents, we’ve placed the rotation by week, above, labeling each week B, R, U, I, or N. Once you know the “letter” designation of your child’s class, you can find its time period in the B-R-U-I-N rotation. On each page in the printed calendar, we’ve labeled weeks by the B-R-U-I-N rotation.
