Camp Bruins: Learning disguised as fun

Parents looking for an enriching way for their child to spend this summer can turn to USJ's Camp Bruins, a full-time summer program for Junior Cubs through rising 6th grade students. The goal of the program, which runs from May 30 to July 28, is to provide participants with a safe, fun environment that allows them to grow over the summer.

"Although it is a structured program, it is disguised as fun," said Director Faith Dixon, who also runs USJ's After-School program during the regular school year.

"Camp Bruins, which is offered as a service to our parents, is filled with activities that complement and enhance the learning experience that students receive during the regular school year. As we developed the program, we did so with the goal of meeting the needs of our families while providing the best program possible for the student."

Mornings are spent in a variety of activities from free choice centers to those that mimic many of the enrichments students have during the school year, such as gym, art, and music. Each week students have a science lesson and a cooking activity and participate in the summer library program. Each week has a different theme with Fridays being water days that often include inflatables.

The program runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Cost for attending five days a week all summer is $1287, $1030 for four days a week, $875 for three days, and $670 for two days. The registration fee is $50 per student with a maximum of $100 per family. The cost includes morning and afternoon snacks. Lunch can be purchased from the cafeteria using the same debit card system that is used during the regular school year, or lunch can be sent from home.

New this year is the addition of a "pick your week(s)" option called Adventure Camp. This allows families to select only the week(s) needed for camp, rather than enrolling for the entire summer. See below for more information on Adventure Camps.

"We heard our families asking for an enriching way for their children to spend the summer," said Dixon. "Camp Bruins was our answer. At USJ, when our families have a need, we listen and respond as best we can. Being a part of this great big family that is USJ is one of the selling points for this school."
